Woolfe Street Playhouse

The Woolfe Street Playhouse is the new home of The Village Repertory Company. Here a 17,000 sq. ft. complex serves as a cultural anchor of the rapidly transforming and vibrant Upper King Design District in historic downtown Charleston.

The Woolfe Street Playhouse boasts not one, but two theatres located in the facility: the Main Stage known as the “Davis Theater” and the “Shop Stage” where innovative new works will be performed.

The new Playhouse has dedicated rehearsal, classroom and music spaces, as well as both a lobby wine bar, a full service theater bar and a private parking lot for patrons.

We are excited to offer extensive children’s programs and look forward to productions aimed at K-12 including Saturday matinees, school shows, after school programs and kids camps, in addition to the Village Rep on Woolfe’s Season 12 offerings of dramas, comedies and musicals.

Barsa Voted "Best Tapas" in Charleston Two Years in a Row

Congratulations to Barsa for winning "Best Tapas" two years in a row in the Charleston City Paper's Best of Charleston 2013 Awards. 

"Each of the small plates at Barsa gives the diners a taste of Spain — and there are a lot of them here. The menu runs the gamut from patatas bravas (think french fries) to traditional croquettes, stuffed dates, and a decent charcuterie selection. And since the plates are meant to be shared, it’s easy to justify ordering more than a few. And while technically it’s not a tapa, you can’t go wrong with their paella."

Joe Pasta to Reopen on Upper King Street on March 15th

 Joe Pasta will reopen Friday, March 15 at 4:00 PM after a small fire damaged the restaurant February 26. Known for affordable Italian specialties and sidewalk dining, Joe Pasta has anchored the corner at King Street and John since 1998.  

"While the fire was a definite setback, it's just another bump in the road on Joe Pasta's long lasting journey. We're working hard to reopen bigger, better, stronger than ever," said Joe Pasta owner Harrison Edelson. Edelson is known in the community for his support of Chief Gregory Mullen's Responsible Hospitality Group, the Muscular Dystrophy Association and charities served by the Cooper River Bridge Run Taste of the Race.

In January, Joe Pasta's much-loved bartender Serjei Cahuantzi was killed in a car accident on I-526 by an alleged drunk driver. His loss has been widely felt in Charleston's food and beverage community.

The Village Repertory Co. Is Now In Upper King

The Village Repertory Co. is a non profit professional theatre company, producing drama, comedy, and musicals with a special emphasis on the finest plays of the 20th Century.

As the theatre company in residence at the Woolfe Street Playhouse, our aim is to bring lesser known classics and new works to life in a unique environment: The Village Rep creates theatre that breaks down the barriers between the performer and the audience. We create for our community, from within our community, working with Charleston's local ensemble of actors and artists.

Fifteen years ago Charleston’s theater scene primarily consisted of two community theater companies presenting traditional plays and musicals in large size venues. Very few lesser known dramas or musicals were presented and safe fare was the norm. Today, the Village Repertory Co. regularly broadens the cultural arts scene with bold productions of challenging new and established works.

There are now more than 15 theatre companies of all shapes and sizes in Charleston. The Village Rep is proud to have been a leader in raising the bar on theatrical diversity, inventive programming and artistic excellence in our community.

Under the leadership of founding Artistic Director Keely Enright and Managing Director Dave Reinwald, the company has built an impeccable reputation for consistent theatrical excellence and nuanced cannon of work that is like no other in the community.

PURE Theatre Presents "Parhelia", Feb. 26th - Mar. 10th

Set against the bleak and windy Yorkshire moors  in the mid-1800s, Arlene Hutton’s Parhelia follows the lives of the Brontë sisters as they struggle to find creative prosperity, while navigating the harsh realities of male society. Faced with limited opportunities for educated women, Charlotte, Emily and Anne live in the rich worlds of their imaginations, until they are forced to face the truth that nothing is certain, and their destinies are best served when held firmly in their own hands. Inspired by Three Sisters by Anton Chekhov,Parhelia is a rich adaptation that deftly explores the parallels in the lives of the Brontë’s and the Prozorovs resulting in a deeply gratifying new theatre piece by the author of Letters to Sala and Last Train to Nibroc.
