Ted opened a Charleston store on King Street in 2011, and prior to that, was named Georgia Small Business Person of the Year and his enterprise has been honored four times by Inc. Magazine as "One of America’s Fastest Growing Companies." His passion has never changed. “I just love it. I can’t imagine doing anything else.”
Ted Dennard was first introduced to honey as a 12-year old when a battered pickup carrying beehives rattled into his life. The bee-covered driver warned him about his passion: “Son, bees sort of become a way of life.”
Indeed, bees and honey became Ted’s life. He kept bees in high school, then at college at the University of the South and taught beekeeping to village farmers in Central America while serving with the Peace Corps. Returning home to Savannah, he
continued extracting honey and pouring it into beautiful found bottles and given as gifts to friends and family. “I was bottling honey in the kitchen and keeping bees on the roof,” he recalls.
In 2002 he quit his day job, mortgaged his house, and put all his money into the venture. He started in an old 800 square foot classroom at the Oatland Island Wildlife Preserve, where he paid his rent in honey.
Today, Ted has a 40,000 sq. ft. warehouse, four retail stores, bottles two distinct lines of world-class honeys, and manufactures a luxury beeswax-based body care line. His honey products are sold at thousands of locally owned specialty stores across the country, plus Williams-Sonoma, Dean & DeLuca, Neiman Marcus, Whole Foods, Crate & Barrel and a host of others.
Each month, Small Business Lunch at Halls features a distinguished speaker from the business, civic or political arenas upstairs at Halls Chophouse with an imaginative three course meal prepared by Executive Chef Matthew Niessner.
Tickets are $28 per person for the luncheon and parking. Doors open at 11:30 AM and lunch is served promptly at noon. Limited seating of 60 participants provides an intimate experience with each speaker. Click Here For ticket Information or call the 24/7 ticket hotline at 1-800-838-3006.
