Picturesque Evacuation Ploy Featuring New Works By Liz Miller at REDUX Art Center

 REDUX Contemporary Art Center is proud to present Picturesque Evacuation Ploy, a new site-specific installation by visiting artist Liz Miller. Miller will create a large-scale installation in the gallery during a three-week residency from October 1-21, 2011. Her media installations and drawings recontextualize simplified shapes, signs and symbols from disparate historical and contemporary imagery to create abstract fictions.

The public is encouraged to visit the gallery during the installation to view Miller's process of transforming the gallery space. Join Redux Contemporary Art Center at 136 Saint Philip St. for the Artist Lecture on Friday Oct. 21 at 5:30pm and the Opening Reception from 6-9pm.

During the much awaited Upper King Design District Fall Design Walk on Thursday, October 20th, Susan Colwell, a Michael Mitchell Gallery artist, will be painting on site in the gallery that evening. Susan paints landscapes in an abstract-impressionist style, using large loose strokes. She says, "I try to recapture my feelings about a place by using color and form, producing a presence of space, mood and light".

La Fourchette hosts Happy Hour Reception for Artist Sybil Fix at Design Walk

La Fourchette, 432 King Street, will host a Happy Hour reception for Artist Sybil Fix at Upper King Design District Fall Design Walk October 20 at 5:00 PM. Fix is a graduate of Yale University and Columbia University. She grew up in Tuscany and has lived in Charleston 20 years. She founded the The Terra Project, a program for children that uses food to teach academic disciplines and explore social justice and environmental issues. Raising and painting chickens came out of that educational and creative process.

"I paint my large paintings on butcher paper and the small ones on canvas since paper would be impractical. I paint or finger paint – or a combination of the two – with oils and oil sticks," said Fix. Click here to download Coqs et Coquettes and read more about Sybil Fix.
