Join Art Mecca of Charleston for their Monthly Artist Reception on March 18th from 6:00 - 8:00pm. This 3rd Friday Artist Party features mother and daughter duo: Caroline Berthet Davila and Carolina Davila Jewett.
Carolina Berthet Davila paints beautiful watercolors, usually the size of a greeting card and they are destined for that purpose. "My cards are one way to keep in touch with friends and family as well as a way to express emotions such as love and gratitude. It is a way to show appreciation for what others have done for us and to let them know that we are thinking about them, remembering the special moments in their lives
I enjoy capturing moments and objects that have a special meaning to me or to the person who will be receiving the card. They are not a photographic portrayal but an impression, mood, or can just be a ray of sunshine. When I show one of me pieces, I don't describe the scene or the object portrayed, I recall the conversations that were going on around me, where I was, who was with me and the emotions that I was experiencing at that moment.
Carolina Davila Jewett is a painter who was raised in a family of artists. "As a little girl, I watched as my grandmother painted tiny roses and delicate petals onto the lightest porcelain cup. The kiln would be fired in the afternoon and the next morning felt like Christmas as I ran to see the beautiful pieces come out. From watercolor and oil painting to the delicate practice of painting on porcelain and intricacy of needlepoint, my family enjoys it all. Whether crochet and tapestries scattered throughout the living room...or at the dining table with a still-life, there was always inspiration near.
I hold in my hands the practices that I was taught by the generations before me ad I hope and pray that I can capture my grandmother's spirits in my work. I can honestly say that after years of studying under some great instructors, the best teachers for me, have been the women in my life who have shown humility and patience as they quietly create. "
This is a free event open to the public. Enjoy a lovely evening at 427 King Street while listening to live music and snacking on light refreshments.
