Announcing the Featured Artists of SEWE 2013

The Featured Artists for SEWE 2013 marking 31 years of excellence in wildlife art, conservation and the sporting life include Featured Painter Jay Kemp and Featured Sculptor, Pete Zaluzec.

An avid outdoorsman, Kemp paints subjects he knows best and enjoys most – wildlife, nature and the outdoors. “I strive to capture those images that pass quickly in our lives, leaving a fleeting yet memorable impression,” says the artist. Among several other best of shows and excellence awards, Kemp was chosen as an “artist to watch” by U.S. Art Magazine and won the Nature Works art show’s “Award of Excellence.” Learn more about Jay here.

Featured Sculptor, Pete Zaluzec, strives to capture his subject's gestures, personality and character through the expressive powers of sculpture, painting, and original print in his pieces. Zaluzec's highly detailed lifelike birds have won him multiple awards including “Best in World" for an unprecedented 3 consecutive years in decorative miniature wood carving from the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art’s World Championship Carving Competition. PURE Theatre Presents the Elaborate Entrance of Chad Diety, Kristoffer Diaz's Action-Packed Wrestling Play

 PURE Theatre will open their 10th anniversary season with the regional premiere of Kristoffer Diaz's award-winning play The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity on September 14. The 2010 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama, winner of the 2011 Lucille Lortel Award for Best Play, and winner of the 2011 Obie Award for Best New American Play enters the PURE stage turned wrestling arena with high acclaim.

Kristoffer Diaz’s The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity is a serious-minded comedy about wrestling, geopolitics, and raisin bread. Mace (Michael Smallwood) is a professional wrestler. He’s a really good professional wrestler. He’s not the champion, though—that’s the impossibly charismatic Chad Deity (Christian Duboise). When Mace discovers a young Indian American Brooklyn kid (Eric Doucette) whose charisma rivals that of the champ, Mace decides to get him a job in the company. Only problem is, the boss has a very specific plan for the duo: put them onscreen as terrorists. What Mace learns without a doubt is that, “In wrestling, you can’t kick a guy’s ass without the help of the guy whose ass you’re kicking.”

Chad Deity will play for four weeks from September 14 to October 6. New "Art of Style" Series from The Michael Mitchell Gallery

 The Michael Mitchell Gallery and stylist Alexandra Styles have teamed up for an ‘Art of Style’ series to be featured weekly. Style relates to all aspects of our lives whether it be art, beauty or fashion. Style is an art form in itself and an expression of character. Follow them each Thursday as they merge art and fashion to best embody the true elements of style. This week's inspiration is the bright & energetic landscape painting "Playing Hooky" by Charleston artist Marissa Vogl.

Marissa Vogl's work can be seen at The Michael Mitchell Gallery, located at 483 King Street in downtown Charleston.

School's Back In Session with Monthly Mixology Classes at The Cocktail Club

Head back to school this fall with The Cocktail Club's Cocktail Classes held on the first Saturday of every month. The Local Palate: Food Culture of the South recently featured July's cocktail class on their website:

"Instead of desks there were high-top bar tables, set with all of the mixology supplies we would need—muddlers, strainers, glasses, crushed ice, and a menagerie of juices, herbs, and simple syrups. And instead of a strict school teacher with a rigid lesson plan, there was the dynamic duo, Jasmine Beck and Katie Powers, ready to lead us in the art of creating delicious, craft cocktails.

Our instructors picked an appropriate lesson plan for the sweltering hot July day, putting “Agua Frescas” on the agenda for the class...To put us in the learning spirit and give us a taste of what we would soon be creating, they had refreshing Watermelon Agua Frescas ready for us to enjoy as class commenced.

They kicked off the lesson by establishing their comforting mantra that “preference is personal” and assuring us that mixology can be fun and easy...With these tips in mind, we took a stab at creating our first Agua Frescas—the Vintage Summer Cocktail, a sipper adapted from The Cocktail Club’s regular menu... After successfully making cocktails under the guidance of our expert instructors, we were free to experiment with the ingredients and make our own Agua Fresca varieties...With the perfect balance of education and fun, Jasmine and Katie seem to have the recipe for a great mixology class down"
